We consider it particularly tragic that many Catholic bishops and priests have been arrested solely for refusing to form part of the state-controlled Catholic Patriotic Association (CPA). Bishops Su Zhimin and Shi Enxiang as well as the priest Joseph Lu Genjun, all from Hebei Province, are cases in point for us. For years, their detention whereabouts and situation in general have been unknown to the outside world.
As a matter of urgency, we call on you to ensure a rapid investigation into their fate as well as to provide for the unconditional release of these and all other religious prisoners of conscience.
